Tip Day Tuesday: Positive Behavour Rewarding

Hi everyone!

This week's Tip is all about rewarding your doggy for positive behaviour. By no means am I a qualified trainer but we have found an effective way of training our puppy and getting her to repeat a particular behaviour. In fact, this is a method widely used by many trainers.

The Issue:
Having a puppy or doggy does require some element of training ... 'sit', 'go to your blanket', 'outside' and so on. Even if you don't take your doggy for some obedience, we picked up this fantastic and successful way of getting Luna to do something repeatedly that you find acceptable.

The Answer:
Reward positive behaviour. It is honestly that simple. You get your doggy to do it and do it well, then show your doggy they have done well by giving them a treat or something they really like (maybe a chew on their favourite toy for a short period). If they do it incorrect or do something bad (dig a hole somewhere in the garden, get on your chair etc) a nice firm 'no' and no treat usually works well. They learn very quickly what is acceptable to you. One other thing, this does take practice - on both parts!

That's all for this week!
Until next time,
Antz xo

  1. OH I SO agree with you Luna. THAT is exactly how I am training and teaching my puppy Ernie. Treats fur good and No Punishment fur Bad... Well, except fur when he bites my ears.. that Hurts and I do make him scream like a squirrel when he does that. Butt I don't allow my mom and dad to do it.. Just ME beclaws Ernie understands what I am doing and he Wouldn't understand mom or dad if they... punished him.
I did let mom do all the Cheese fur Pees and that worked like a CHARM. I'm just sayin.
    YOU are TOTALLY right.

  5. Since getting Elka, my fiance has made the comment "I didn't realize dog training was this easy. You just reward what you like to see!" I'm glad, really, that he feels this way; I don't know that either of us came from a particularly punishing-to-animals home, and I can't claim that we're positive-only (we are in fact only human), but I'm typically able to feel good about how we treat Elka in everyday land and how we train her.
